How to Choose the right turf for you.
 | The pile height is how long
the fibers are from the tip of the blade to the base where it protrudes from the backing.
Pile height can range from ¼ inch to 2½ inches or more in length. The shorter lengths are used for
indoor areas, usually the nylon with cloth or foam backing. The medium length, ¾ inch to 1½
inches, is used for putting greens, target greens, tee areas, and lawn areas. | The
longer turf of 1½ to 2½ inches is used for playgrounds or sports fields; usually polypropylene,
polyethylene, or a polypropylene with a nylon monofilament. What you choose depends on what you are
trying to accomplish.
The Process of installing a Putting Green
Sub-base materials are intended to provide a base for the synthetic turf.
|
For putting greens it is usually a form of aggregate or decomposed granite. The aggregate
product comes in ¼, ½, and ¾-inch comprised of crushed rock and sand. When mixed together with
the proper amount of moisture and then compacted; it becomes very stable and firm. The ¾-inch
aggregate is commonly referred to as (AB) or asphalt base. Asphalt base is the same materials
used under roads and highways and is known for its inherent compaction qualities. |

What All Sports Turf recommends in many cases is to use ¾-inch asphalt base and then we apply an inch layer of
washed sand (plaster sand) over the base so there are no sharp objects of any kind on the finished sub-base.

Then, it’s compacted
and graded to follow the undulation below. The entire surface is then hand-troweled with concrete
tools making it ready for turf.

No synthetic turf is maintenance free. Any outdoor surface will require periodic cleaning and care.
Routine maintenance depends on the location of the putting green. If your putting green turf collects
debris -- such as leaves, simply use a leaf blower or a broom to
remove. You may use a
spray gun on a hose to remove mud, dust, and other forms of organic debris. Just be sure that you spray at an angle across the surface so as not to disturb the in-fill.
The only other maintenance we recommend is periodically rolling the putting green with a water-filled
sod roller to smooth the surface to allow for true bounce and roll. This is best done on a warm day in direct sunlight which makes the turf more pliable.
